Hospital Pharmacy
We have a fully integrated, in-house Pharmacy team that supports Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary, Galloway Community Hospital and cottage hospitals throughout the region.
The team has implemented services to support the Health Board and develop staff internally to ensure they can ‘grow their own’ talent, maximising use of the skill mix at all opportunities. Team Pharmacy comprises of Pharmacists, Pharmacy Technicians, Pharmacy support workers and students across the different areas of the service.
The team offer the following services throughout our hospitals:
- Support dispensing and distribution
- Aseptic
- Medicine information
- Clinical services.

- State-of-the-art technology such as a BD Rowa Vmax robots which check inventory on delivery, pick medicine for distribution and rotate stock as necessary
- We make efficient use of staff expertise at all opportunities, including operating a Pharmacist-Light dispensary
- HEPMA (Hospital electronic prescribing and medicines administration) in place to ensure safe, effective prescribing of medicines across the health board.

GP Practice based Pharmacy
The Pharmacy team within GP practices are part of The Community Health and Social Care Pharmacy Team are imbedded within GP practices and support people living in the community with their medication within Dumfries and Galloway across all four cluster areas, Annandale and Eskdale, Dumfries and Nithsdale, Stewarty and Wigtownshire.
The team are made up of:
- Pharmacists
- Technicians
- Support Workers
- Students
The team offer the following:
Discuss, review & prescribe medication to patients
Help manage long term health conditions
Check test results to ensure medicines are appropriate
Liaise with other health care partners to enhance patient care
Provide Specialist clinics
