Call for those not vaccinated to take up increased opportunities

DROP-IN clinics are continuing to take place for people in Dumfries and Galloway still to receive their first COVID-19 vaccination, or who are more than eight weeks from their first.

As at the end of 12 July, a total of 114,256 first dose vaccinations had been delivered to adults aged 18 plus – representing 93.1 per cent of the entire adult population.

Meanwhile, 70.5 per cent of the adult population has had both doses, with 86,516, and this is expected to increase quite quickly on the basis of the eight week interval between first and second dose.

Immunisation Co-ordinator Dr Nigel Calvert said: “With all originally scheduled first dose vaccinations having been delivered, we’re really focused on doing all we can to ensure any adult who has not yet been vaccinated to be supported to that opportunity.

“As part of this, we have drop-in clinics now taking place where anyone can call in without an appointment to receive either their first vaccination or their second if more than eight weeks from the first.

“Vaccinations are quick, easy, free and provide a high degree of protection against the coronavirus, helping to protect ourselves, our loved ones and the wider community.

“There are further changes around restrictions aimed at limiting spread of COVID-19 on Monday which could mean that our chances of encountering the virus are increased.

“The best means to protect ourselves against COVID-19 is by taking up the opportunity of vaccination, and getting a second dose.

“Getting vaccinated also supports the moves towards easing of restrictions, with First Minister Nicola Sturgeon yesterday noting that people who have received both vaccinations will not have to self-isolate when returning from amber list countries.”

As part of the original schedule of vaccinations, these could only be provided to those people who were going to be 18 by July 31 2021.

However, as stated by the Scottish Government, anyone who has turned 18 after that point can now be vaccinated via the drop-in clinics.

Dr Calvert said: “We’d encourage everyone to find out about vaccine opportunities by visiting www.nhsdg.co.uk/vaccines/ and we’ll be looking to keep everyone updated about all vaccination opportunities.

“Transport support is available around vaccinations, and people can find out about this and can also still schedule a vaccination appointment by phoning the local team on 01387 403090 Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm, or by emailing dg.covidenquiries@nhs.scot

“Vaccinations can also be scheduled by visiting www.nhsinform.scot/vaccineregistration ”

Dumfries and Galloway continues to have the highest percentage of people aged 18 plus vaccinated among mainland NHS Boards in Scotland.
