GP Walk-in Clinic

Waverley Medical Centre, Stranraer

About the service

The GP Walk-in Clinic at Waverley Medical Centre provides assessment and treatment for people with urgent health concerns that are not emergencies.

You do not need an appointment. Patients are seen in order of clinical need by a GP or an Advanced Nurse Practitioner.

The clinic complements existing GP services by providing another way to access urgent primary care.

Who can use the clinic?

The clinic is available to:

  • Patients registered with GP practices based at Waverley Medical Centre.
  • Patients registered with GP practices in Glenluce, Sandhead and Drummore.
  • Visitors to the Wigtownshire area who require urgent medical attention during their stay.

Children under five years of age and pregnant patients should continue to contact their own GP practice or the most appropriate healthcare professional.

Opening times

The clinic is open:

  • Seven days a week
  • 12 noon to 8 pm
  • Including weekends

No appointment is required.

What the clinic can help with

The service is designed for urgent, non-emergency conditions, including:

  • New coughs
  • Sore throats
  • Ear infections
  • Chest infections
  • Rashes
  • Fevers
  • Urinary problems
  • Stomach complaints
  • Women’s health concerns
  • Skin conditions
  • Muscle, joint and back pain

This list is not exhaustive, and staff will assess your needs when you attend.

What the clinic cannot provide

The walk-in clinic is not intended for:

  • Medical emergencies
  • Management of long-term or ongoing conditions
  • Routine GP appointments
  • Repeat prescriptions
  • Medication reviews
  • Sick notes

If your condition is life-threatening or an emergency, call 999 immediately or attend your nearest Emergency Department.

When is the best time to attend?

The clinic is busiest shortly after opening at 12 noon, and again around 3 pm and 6 pm.

You are welcome to attend at any time during opening hours, but you may experience longer waits during these peak periods.

Attending at quieter times may help you to be seen more quickly.

If you arrive later in the day and it is not possible to see you before the clinic closes, staff will ensure you are directed to the most appropriate service for your needs.

Before you attend

Please bring:

  • Details of any regular medication you take.
  • Information about any allergies.
  • Your NHS number, if you know it (helpful but not essential).

If you are visiting the area, staff can still assess and treat urgent health concerns where appropriate.
