Nicole Hamlet assumes key role at NHS Dumfries and Galloway

A SENIOR leader with many years of experience has been appointed as the new Chief Operating Officer of NHS Dumfries and Galloway.

Nicole Hamlet takes on the role as part of changes to the way health and social care is led in the region. Previously, there was a joint lead officer role and deputy post across both NHS Dumfries and Galloway and the region’s Health and Social Care Partnership. Now, at no extra cost, there will be one Chief Operating Officer for the NHS and a separate Chief Officer for the Partnership.

Mrs Hamlet steps into the position at a time when services are under significant pressure, with growing demand, workforce challenges and financial pressures all affecting how care is delivered. Having worked for many years within Dumfries and Galloway, she brings not only leadership experience but also a close understanding of the communities the NHS serves.

Speaking about her appointment, Mrs Hamlet said: “It means a great deal to me to take on this role at such a critical time for local services.

“We know the challenges are very real – from growing demand to workforce pressures – but I also believe we have real opportunities to make improvements.”

She added: “I know how committed our staff are to providing the very best care, and I want to make sure they feel supported to do their jobs.

“We face some big challenges, but I believe we also have opportunities to work differently, to listen to our communities, and to strengthen the services people rely on every day.”

Chief Executive of NHS Dumfries and Galloway Julie White welcomed Nicole Hamlet’s appointment.

Mrs White said: “Nicole brings huge experience and insight to this role. She has a deep understanding of the pressures facing health services and a proven commitment to high-quality care.

“This new leadership structure allows us to focus clearly on the NHS’s responsibilities, while continuing to work hand-in-hand with the Partnership.”

Nicole has built her career in Dumfries and Galloway, working across a range of senior roles that have given her first-hand knowledge of both frontline services and the wider health system.

Alongside Nicole’s appointment, Gareth Marr has recently been confirmed as Interim Chief Officer for Dumfries and Galloway Health and Social Care Partnership, where he will also serve as Chief Officer of the Integration Joint Board. Together, the two leaders will oversee services that touch on almost every aspect of people’s lives in the region, from GP practices and hospitals to social care and community support.
