NHS Dumfries & Galloway

Staff Psychology Service

Who are we?

  • A Counselling Psychologist working 2.5 days a week in a remote capacity offering appointments via NHS Near Me.
  • A Psychological Therapist who is a Registered Nurse trained in Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) based in Occupational Health Service. Working 4 days a week for the Staff Psychology Service offering both face to face and NHS Near Me appointments.

Who do we see?

We can offer psychological input to staff within the Health & Social Care partnership (or who are contracted to work for the H &SC partnership) experiencing-

moderate level of psychological/emotional/mental health difficulties such as significant symptoms of anxiety/stress; persistent low mood with accompanied low motivation, poor concentration, loss of interest/withdrawal from activities etc that –

-have been present for quite a prolonged period of time

-have a negative impact on overall functioning

And

  • These symptoms are mainly related to a work situation*, for example, issues with interpersonal relationships within work; undue stress; gone through a very stressful or traumatic experience within the work setting

*We understand that often difficulties are related to both work and personal situations and if you are unsure you meet the criteria for the Staff Psychology Service, you can contact us and will discuss this further with you.

What do we offer?

We aim to offer a ‘screening appointment’ within a few weeks of the referral which will be a shorter appointment to get a better understanding of the issues without going into too much depth ; your goals/aims for the input and if psychological input is suitable for you at this time.

The outcome from this screening will be –

  • You may be offered a brief cognitive-behavioural (CBT) informed intervention (up to 4 sessions) focussed on developing positive coping strategies to manage the present situation
  • You may be placed on our waiting list for longer term psychological input (up to 10-12 sessions) entailing a more comprehensive assessment and formulation of the issues and an evidence-based psychological intervention
  • You may be sign-posted to another Psychology service within the Dept of Psychological Services ; another service within the wider Mental Health Directorate; a Primary Care or Third Sector Service.

For those experiencing ‘milder’ issues (ie fairly recent onset, some impact on functioning) we can signpost you to our Digital Intervention packages; there are Self-Help resources on the NHS Inform Website or the NHS 24 ‘Living Life’ service as well as on the ‘Self-Help Tools’ section of the Staff Well-being Hub  on Beacon.

For those experiencing severe difficulties and difficulties not related to the work situation, please contact your GP Practice for a full consultation and assessment of these issues or for more urgent input, NHS 24 who can discuss options for further support.
